What Canvas Tracks by Default
Canvas can record activity inside Canvas: when you log in, open course pages, start quizzes, answer questions, submit work, leave a quiz tab, return to a quiz tab, and use Canvas pages. Instructors usually see a simplified view, while admins can access deeper logs depending on school settings.
The highest-risk entries for students are quiz focus events. These are the tab-switch-style events that can appear as Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page in a quiz log.
What Canvas Does Not Track by Itself
Canvas alone cannot view your other tabs, read another website, inspect your browser history, see your desktop, record your webcam, or capture your microphone. Those require browser-level permissions, a lockdown browser, or a separate proctoring product.
If your exam uses Respondus, Honorlock, Proctorio, or another proctoring layer, treat that as a different privacy situation. Those tools may have permissions Canvas does not have.
