Tab switches, refocuses, and the "Stopped viewing" log entries are exactly what Privacy Guard intercepts — in your browser, before they reach Canvas.

- How do you know this is accurate?
- Every detection claim is grounded in Instructure's public Quiz Submission Events API and Canvas's open-source code on GitHub. We don't make up "Canvas can see X" claims to scare you into installing. If anything, our content tends to debunk the rumors.
- Does this apply to New Quizzes too?
- Mostly. New Quizzes captures similar tab-switch events with comparable event names. The biggest difference: New Quizzes can show IP addresses to instructors with the right permission. Classic Quizzes hides IPs at the instructor level by default.
- Can Canvas see when I switch tabs?
- Canvas can see that its quiz tab lost focus, but it cannot see the name, URL, or content of the tab you switched to. For the detailed breakdown, read Can Canvas See If You Switch Tabs?.
- Can Canvas see my IP address?
- Yes. Canvas can record IP addresses in login, page-view, quiz, and submission metadata. See the full Canvas IP address guide for where that data can appear.
- What about proctoring tools?
- This tool covers Canvas LMS itself. If your exam launches Honorlock, Proctorio, or Respondus Monitor, the answer changes — those tools record video/screen and can catch things Canvas alone cannot. See our post on whether Canvas can detect screen sharing for the proctor distinction.
