.docx file, Canvas does not automatically give your teacher access to the private version history stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. But the uploaded file can still contain tracked changes, comments, author details, and document properties. A file upload is not the same as sharing the cloud document
Microsoft explains that Word version history depends on the document being stored in OneDrive or a SharePoint library. When you download or save a copy and upload that copy to Canvas, the private server-side list of earlier versions is not transferred with the file.
The answer can differ if an assignment uses a live Microsoft 365 integration or asks you to submit a sharing link. Access then depends on the permissions attached to that cloud document. Read the assignment instructions and inspect the link's sharing settings.
What a Word file can still reveal
A .docx file is more than the words you see on the page. Microsoft documents that unaccepted tracked changes and reviewer markup can remain in the document. Comments, author names, titles, and other properties may also be saved with it.
Switching Word to “No Markup” only hides changes from the current view; it does not necessarily remove them. Accept or reject changes intentionally, resolve comments when appropriate, and use Word's document inspection tools if your school requires a clean final file. Do not erase collaboration records when an assignment or academic-integrity policy requires them.
What Canvas records about the submission
Canvas records when you submit and can retain earlier attempts. The current Instructure SpeedGrader guide says instructors can use the submission menu to view prior submissions.
That Canvas submission history is separate from Word's edit history. A teacher may see that you uploaded version one at 9:10 and version two at 9:24, but that does not reveal every keystroke or every private OneDrive save made before those uploads.
A responsible pre-submit check
- Open the exact file you plan to upload—not only the cloud original.
- Review Track Changes and comments according to the assignment rules.
- Check File > Info for document properties you did not intend to include.
- Confirm the filename, author attribution, citations, and accessibility.
- After submitting, reopen the Canvas preview or download your submission to verify the correct file.
Converting to PDF is not a guaranteed metadata eraser; PDFs can have their own properties and comments. Inspect the final artifact instead of relying on the extension.
