Canvas Quiz Log Explainer

Paste your quiz log text below. Works with the raw log output from SpeedGrader or the Quiz Statistics page. The tool looks for keywords like "Stopped viewing", "Resumed", "Answered", and "Flagged" — no data leaves your browser.

Click the buttons to simulate what a student would do during a quiz. Each action adds a real log entry — with the exact event name Canvas records.

What your instructor sees:

Click "Start quiz" to begin the simulation — the log will fill in below.

What each entry means:

The five event types Canvas Classic Quizzes records, straight from Instructure's Quiz Submission Events API:

session_started — "Started the Canvas quiz-taking page"

Fires once when you first open the quiz. Records the timestamp. Used by Canvas to start the timer. Not blockable, not concerning — every student fires this.

question_answered — "Answered question N"

Fires every time Canvas auto-saves an answer (typically every 30s or on field-blur). Records the answer payload at that moment. Multiple events fire per question as you edit. Normal — this is how Canvas saves your work.

question_flagged — "Flagged question N for review"

Fires when you click the bookmark icon on a question to flag it for later. Useful study behaviour. Not suspicious.

page_blurred — "Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page"

This is the one. Fires every time the quiz tab loses focus — alt-tab, switch tabs, click another window, even open a system menu in some cases. Each fire = one log entry with a timestamp. Multiple of these is the #1 red flag instructors look for.

page_focused — "Resumed"

The companion to page_blurred. Fires when you click back into the quiz tab. The gap between blur and focus tells your instructor exactly how long you were away.

What Canvas does NOT record

  • Which other tabs you have open
  • What you typed and then deleted (only final answers)
  • Your keystrokes or typing speed
  • Whether you used a second device (phone, tablet, second monitor)
  • What was on your screen during the quiz
  • Whether your screen was split or shared

Block the entries that flag students

The page_blurred / page_focused events are what get you in trouble. Canvas Ninja's Privacy Guard intercepts them in your browser before they reach Canvas's server. Your quiz log stays empty of tab-switch entries.
