Want to check another action? Use What Can Canvas See? for an action-by-action explanation of screenshots, tab changes, split screen, copy/paste, and screen sharing.
| Action | Canvas alone | Important exception |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Snipping Tool or Print Screen | No screenshot alert | Managed-device or proctoring controls may restrict it |
| macOS Shift-Command-3/4/5 | No screenshot alert | A proctoring recording may capture what was visible |
| Phone photo of the screen | No device signal to Canvas | A webcam proctor may see the phone |
| Screen recording | Canvas cannot see another recorder | A proctoring tool may record the screen itself |
Why Canvas cannot see screenshots
Canvas runs as a website inside a browser tab. A screenshot shortcut is handled by your operating system, outside that web page. Browsers do not provide ordinary sites with a general event that says “the user took a screenshot,” so Canvas has nothing to add to a normal quiz or activity log.
Canvas can still receive information generated inside its own page: answers you submit, page requests, and—during supported quiz flows—signals that the quiz page stopped being active. Those are different from a screenshot notification.
Windows, Mac, Chromebook, and phones
On Windows, Print Screen, the Snipping Tool, and Windows-Shift-S are operating-system actions. On macOS, Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4, and Shift-Command-5 are also handled outside the Canvas page. Canvas does not receive a standard event from those shortcuts.
Chromebooks and mobile devices can behave differently when a school manages the hardware. Canvas itself still does not provide a normal instructor-facing screenshot alert, but device-management policies may block screenshots or report activity outside Canvas. Taking a photo with a second phone sends no technical signal to Canvas, although a webcam-based proctor could see the phone or your movement.
Screenshots and screen recording are not the same
A screenshot saves one image. Screen recording continuously captures the display. Canvas LMS alone does neither during a standard quiz. Read Does Canvas Record Your Screen During a Quiz? for the full recording distinction.
A separate web tool can request screen-sharing permission through the browser, but the browser's getDisplayMedia() flow prompts the user to select and grant access to a display, window, or tab. Standard Canvas quizzes do not silently gain that permission.
When proctoring changes the answer
Respondus, Honorlock, Proctorio, and other proctoring products are separate from Canvas LMS. Depending on the product and settings, they may lock keyboard shortcuts, record the display, monitor the webcam, or require a special browser. In that situation, the safest assumption is that whatever appears on the recorded screen may be reviewed.
A proctoring recording seeing content on your screen is not the same as Canvas receiving an operating-system “screenshot taken” event. Always check the launch flow, permissions, and assessment instructions to understand which layer is active.
What a teacher can actually see
- Canvas alone: no standard screenshot timestamp, filename, image, or screenshot notification.
- Quiz logs: supported quiz activity such as answers and page-departure events—not an OS screenshot history.
- Proctoring reports: whatever the separately enabled proctoring product records or flags.
- Submitted evidence: an image you upload, paste into Canvas, or include in a submission is visible because you submitted it.

- Can Canvas see if you screenshot?
- No. Canvas LMS alone does not receive a standard notification when your operating system takes a screenshot.
- Can Canvas detect screenshots on a phone?
- Canvas does not provide instructors a standard screenshot alert from the mobile app. Managed-device policies or separate proctoring software may add other controls.
- Can Canvas see a photo taken with another phone?
- No technical signal from the second phone reaches Canvas. A webcam proctor could still observe the phone or your movement.
- Can a teacher see the screenshot file?
- Not through Canvas unless you upload, paste, or otherwise submit the image. Separate device-management software is outside Canvas and may have different access.
