How to Check Your GPA on Canvas (and Why It May Be Missing)

Short answer: Open Grades in Canvas to see your current grades for each course. That is not always the same as your official GPA. Many colleges keep semester and cumulative GPA in a separate student portal or transcript system. If Canvas only shows course percentages or letter grades, use those grades and your credit hours to estimate GPA.

How to check your grades on Canvas in a browser

  1. Sign in through your school's Canvas website.
  2. Select Grades in the left-side Global Navigation menu to see grades across active courses.
  3. Select a course name for its detailed Grades page.
  4. Check the displayed total, assignment-group weights, individual scores, and instructor feedback.
  5. If your school uses grading periods, confirm that you are viewing the correct term or period.

You can also open a course first and choose Grades from Course Navigation. Canvas may show a percentage, letter grade, points, or qualitative feedback depending on the course settings. Instructure's What-If Grades guide explains the difference between a current grade based on graded work and a total that includes all assignments.

How to check grades in the Canvas Student app

  1. Open the Canvas Student app and sign in to your school.
  2. Open the course you want to check.
  3. Tap Grades.
  4. Tap an assignment to review its score, status, comments, or rubric when available.

The app can display course grades, but the exact layout and available details depend on your device, app version, and institution. Instructure's Canvas Student app overview confirms that students can view grades from mobile devices.

Canvas course grade vs. official GPA

A Canvas course grade answers, “How am I doing in this class?” GPA answers a different question: “What is the credit-weighted value of my final grades under my school's academic rules?” Canvas is a learning management system, while the official GPA is often maintained in your institution's student information or records system.

That means a 92% shown in Canvas does not automatically tell you how many GPA points the course will receive. Your school decides whether 92% is an A, A-, or something else; whether plus/minus grades count; how repeated courses work; and which pass/fail courses are excluded.

Why your grade or GPA may be missing

  • The instructor hid grade totals. Canvas allows instructors to hide current and total grade percentages.
  • Work has not been posted. A submitted assignment may be waiting for grading, or a score may be subject to a posting policy.
  • You are viewing one grading period. Switch periods when that option is available.
  • The course uses a different grading display. You may see a letter, points, comments, or other qualitative information instead of a percentage.
  • Your GPA lives outside Canvas. Look for Academic Records, Degree Audit, Transcript, or Grades in your school's main student portal.

A lock icon or dashes can indicate that totals are hidden. Instructure notes that when an instructor hides totals, students cannot view the current or total grade on the Grades page. Ask your instructor about the course total; contact your registrar or academic advising office for an official GPA.

How to estimate your GPA from Canvas grades

  1. Collect the final letter grade for each course.
  2. Find the credit hours for each course in your schedule or catalog.
  3. Convert each letter grade to points using your school's GPA scale.
  4. Multiply grade points by credit hours for each course.
  5. Add those results and divide by the total GPA-bearing credit hours.

For example, an A in a 3-credit course contributes 12 grade points on a 4.0 scale. A B in another 3-credit course contributes 9. Together, that is 21 grade points divided by 6 credits, or an estimated 3.50 GPA. Use your school's actual scale and policies for the closest estimate.
